The Teacher Who Turns You Into The Person You Are Supposed To Be

Today is my oldest child's 6th birthday.

It is not only her birthday, but it is the anniversary of the day I became a mother.

Motherhood has been the greatest journey for me .... and I'm only 6 years into it!

My children have been my greatest motivation to take off the mask that I used to wear; to do the work that I needed to do so that I can love and accept and celebrate both them, and the harder one of myself, for the exact people we are.

My daughter was born 5 weeks prematurely after the pregnancy was diagnosed with a condition that carried a 95% chance of stillbirth.   Despite the odds she was born alive, and despite being premature she was raring to go in the world, just as she still is today.  The pregnancy, her birth and her, have taught me so much.

As well as celebrating with my daughter, I will stop to reflect on this quote as I do every year on her birthday because I am lucky, oh so lucky that this spirited and expressive person choose me to be her mama:

Motherhood is about raising and celebrating the child you have, not the child you thought you would have. It's about understanding that he is exactly the person he is supposed to be. And that, if you're lucky, he just might be the teacher who turns you into the person you are supposed to be.” - Joan Ryan
